The era of self-management, self-organisation & self-organising systems is here! As a new social technology there's lots of hype, misunderstanding and bad practice as people get enthused by new ways of working, experiment and learn from mistakes. This site provides an evolving set of resources to help you gain clarity and understanding from someone who knows; who has been working with self-organisation for over 25 years, has created and delivered training and consultancy in it and became the first Certified Holacracy Coach in the UK and the only European partner of HolacracyOne. 

PLEASE NOTE: This site is in beta as a Minimum Viable Product to get some early feedback, and so is incomplete and a little rough around the edges. Self-Organisation Primer- 1.5 hours

An introduction to self-organisation & self-management; it introduces the idea that the conventional command & control management hierarchy is no longer fit for purpose in many organisations; and that two different patterns of organising are emerging; a flatter more collaborative approach and a distributed more agile approach. Then we take a more detailed look at how this looks in the culture of conventional hierarchies, more collaborative and more agile approaches.

The management hierarchy which so many of us are used to, has taught us to take for granted how many things work in organisations: such as how decisions are made, how conflict is addressed, how meetings are run, how purpose is decided, how organisational learning happens to name but a few... 

When self-organising beyond hierarchy people need to collaborate to figure these things out ourselves in ways which are different than we are used to and which we may not have the experience/skills/protocols to do it. 
 

This resource is a collection of materials to help groups/teams/organisations to this. The material is organised into 6 areas of group/team/organisational life which all need to be attended to in order to create the conditions for collaboration. The resources are designed to surface assumptions and unconscious habits, so that they can be spoken about and consciously worked with; thus creating the conditions for collaboration to become more intentional, conscious and healthy.

Self-Organisation Beyond Hierarchy Animation Series- 1 hour 15 mins

This series of 7 short films look beyond hierarchy at two approaches to self-organisation. Traditionally, many of us are used to being in hierarchies, with the boss at the top, but times are changing and we are seeing a paradigm shift in how people organise. There are now needs and desires to work in different ways together, and people are starting to self-organise beyond hierarchy; but many of us don’t know how to do this. Some people are working with a more collaborative approach, set of values and flatter structures, while others have a more dynamic, agile and evolutionary approach, while others just create a fuzzy mess! This introduces the three approaches which are then described in more detail in the 6 episodes of this series (1 hour 15 mins in total).

The highly acclaimed book ‘Reinventing Organisations‘ has sparked wide interest in self-organisation beyond hierarchy and there are many ways to do this. As a co-founder of Conscious Collaboration, I work with my partner Justine Corrie to offer a way of understanding the variety of methodologies, tools and skills to enable you to choose ones which fit your culture and organisation.

 

When things are volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous, people and organisations need to be agile and responsive to adapt. Holacracy is one off-the shelf methodology to help achieve this. As the only UK Partner of HolacracyOne I work to evolve the Holacracy and support the development of Holacracy in the UK.

About Nick

Nick Osborne is an entrepreneur in the business of shifting paradigms; co-founder of Conscious Collaboration, Evolving Organisation and Learning Edge with whom he works as a Trainer, Consultant and Presenter.

With a wide range of experience over 30 years: in private, public and non-profit sectors; employed, freelance, entrepreneur, volunteer; with organisations including Shell, Learning and Skills Improvement Service and the Princes Trust; in the UK, Europe, North and South America. This experience combined with his fascination for and study of how people learn and work together provides Nick with an unusually wide and deep perspective on organisations, management and leadership.

A self-acknowledged control-freak, Nick appreciates how disruptive this can be in working with others. Recognising how the desire for control also limits hierarchies in our complex and rapidly changing world led him to seek alternatives to hierarchy. Nick has integrated his learning about more collaborative, agile and evolutionary approaches to create the entertaining Self-Organisation Beyond Hierarchy series of short animated films.

This journey led Nick in 2012 to Holacracy ; the revolutionary management system that abolishes hierarchy, and to his completion of all available training. He was the first Certified Holacracy Coach delivering public Holacracy Workshops and implementations in organisations in the UK and now delivers his Holacracy work through HolacracyOne.

Nick’s journey pushing the boundaries of management began when a summary of his Management MSc thesis ‘An Inquiry into Corporate Social Responsibility and New Paradigm Thinking’ was Nick Osborne A circlepublished in the book Management Models for Corporate Social Responsibility. He also created the successful Learning Edge workshops, co-created the Conscious Collaboration workshops, and was in the first wave of Transition Trainers.

Nick seeks to catalyse the transition to a way of thinking and living which addresses, rather than contributes to, today’s challenges. His work upgrades the way we learn, collaborate and run our organisations to enable better fit for the volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous conditions of the 21st century. He sees this as essential for a sustainable human presence on Earth and for evolving templates for healthy human cultures in outer space. He lives in Somerset with his son and loves meditating reading and surfing waves in the ocean as well as those of social innovation.
